Embrace the World: A Solo Woman Traveller’s Guide to Your First Overseas Adventure

Hello, fellow wanderlust souls!  If you’re reading this, chances are you’re contemplating your first solo adventure abroad. Excitement mingles with a sprinkle of nerves, right? Fear not! I’m here to sprinkle some inspiration into your travel dreams and help you take that exhilarating leap into the unknown.

Solo travel isn’t just about seeing new places; it’s about discovering yourself, embracing freedom, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. So, grab your favourite travel journal, and let’s dive into the world of possibilities!

Let's recap with some of the ideas from my last blogs .. Why Solo Travel?

1. Self-Discovery

Travelling alone allows you to connect with yourself on a deeper level. You’ll make decisions based on your desires, preferences, and whims. Whether it’s choosing where to eat or how long to stay in a particular spot, the power is in your hands!

2. Empowerment

Nothing feels quite as empowering as navigating a new city solo. From ordering food in a foreign language to asking for directions, every little interaction boosts your confidence. You’ll realize just how capable you are!

3. Connection

You’ll meet amazing people along the way—fellow travellers, locals, and perhaps even long-lasting friends. Solo travel often leads to unexpected connections, enriching your experience in ways you can’t imagine.

4. Adventure Awaits

Travelling solo means every day is a new adventure. Say yes to spontaneous activities, explore hidden gems, and immerse yourself in the culture. The world is your playground!

Tips to Overcome the Nerves

  1. Start Small: If you’re feeling anxious, consider starting with a weekend getaway to a nearby destination. This will help ease you into the solo travel experience.

  2. Research, Research, Research: Knowledge is power! Familiarize yourself with your destination, local customs, and safety tips. The more prepared you are, the more confident you’ll feel as you board the plane.

  3. Connect with Fellow Travellers: Join travel groups online or attend local meetups. Sharing your aspirations with like-minded women can provide support and encouragement.

  4. Create a Travel Plan: A loose itinerary can help ease anxiety. Knowing what you want to do and see can keep you focused and excited! Keep it loose so that you are not putting pressure on yourself if something changes last minute .. those moments often turn into miraculous divine interventions!

  5. Trust Your Instincts: Listen to your intuition. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s okay to change your plans. Your safety and comfort come first!

An inspirational quote to get you excited ...

"Travel far enough, you meet yourself." — David Mitchell

This quote beautifully encapsulates the essence of solo travel. Each journey is a step toward discovering the amazing person you already are.

Crafting Your First Itinerary: How about a weekend in Barcelona?

Let’s get practical! Here’s a simple and fun itinerary for your first solo trip to Barcelona, a city that perfectly blends culture, history, and vibrant life. It's a great city to start a cruise, a tour, or simply just to visit in and of itself.

Day 1: Arrival and Exploration

  • Morning: Arrive in Barcelona. Check into a cozy hostel, Air BnB or boutique hotel. Consider places like St. Christopher’s Inn or Casa Gracia—great for solo female travellers!

  • One of my first things to do in any new city is the Hop-on/Hop-off bus tour ... I love being in the open air and find that the tour always gives me such a sense of belonging to the place that I am visiting, while including all the main highlights in one easy trip.

  • Afternoon: Head to Las Ramblas for a leisurely stroll. Take in the street performers and grab lunch at La Boqueria market. Don’t forget to try some tapas!

  • Evening: Visit Park Güell to watch the sunset. The colorful mosaics and stunning views will leave you in awe. Capture this magical moment—perfect for Instagram!

Day 2: Culture and Connection

  • Morning: Visit the Sagrada Família, Gaudí’s masterpiece. Book your tickets in advance to avoid long lines!

  • Afternoon: Join a walking tour to meet fellow travellers. Choose a tour focused on local cuisine or history. It’s a fantastic way to connect with others and learn about the city and to get your body moving.

  • Evening: Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant. Try Cal Pep for delicious seafood. Afterward, explore the nightlife in the Gothic Quarter—you might find a lively bar or a flamenco show to enjoy.

Day 3: Reflection and Departure

  • Morning: Take a leisurely breakfast at a café. Embrace the moment and journal about your experiences so far. What has worked for you and what would you do differently?

  • Afternoon: If time allows, visit Montjuïc for stunning views and the Magic Fountain. This is a great spot for some last-minute photos.

  • Evening: Head back home, or further afield, filled with memories, new friendships, and stories that will inspire your next adventure! And a whole new perspective of yourself as being capable and confident, wherever you are in the world!

The Spiritual Side of Travel

Travelling solo is not just about the sights; it’s also a journey within. I find that the more I explore of the world, the more that I explore and learn about myself within. Take moments to meditate, reflect, or practice gratitude and appreciation, it is honestly as important as taking your passport or your ticket!

  • Morning Rituals: Start your day with a few minutes of mindfulness. Breathe deeply, looking out over the city as the sun rises. Find time to meditate for at least 15 minutes, it's a practice that you won't regret.

  • Evening Reflections: Before bed, write down three things you’re grateful for that day. This practice will keep your spirit uplifted and your heart open. Allow yourself to sit in silence, quiet your mind and allow a deeper reflection to be presented.

Final thoughts, my open letter to you ....

Dear brave traveller,

The world is waiting for you with open arms. Embrace the adventure, step out of your comfort zone, and let your spirit soar!

Every journey you take is a testament to your courage and curiosity. Remember, it’s not just about the destination; it’s about the connections you make and the moments you cherish.

So, pack your bags, trust your instincts, and get ready to create unforgettable memories. Your adventure awaits!
