Looking for fun and free things to do in Auckland? Whether you’re a local or just visiting, this vibrant city offers plenty of ways to enjoy its culture, nature, and stunning views - without spending a cent. Here are 5 of the best free activities that I feel capture the heart of Auckland, Tāmaki Makaurau.
1. Explore the Auckland Art Gallery, Toi o Tāmaki
The Auckland Art Gallery, Toi o Tāmaki, is New Zealand’s largest art institution and entry is free for New Zealand residents and, at present, for International Visitors. Wander through impressive collections of classic and contemporary art, soak up beautiful architecture, and enjoy rotating exhibitions. It’s a great spot for art lovers or anyone wanting a peaceful, cultural escape in the city centre.
While in the area, think about visiting the galleries at the University of Auckland, established in 1883, or at the Auckland Technical University, both in close vicinity and offering art displays from New Zealand's up and coming artists. Or simply walk around the University campus and admire the architecture and the vibe of student life and activities at New Zealand's top ranked university.

2. Wander the Auckland Domain and Botanical Gardens
Take a stroll through Auckland Domain — the city’s oldest park — and discover the stunning Wintergardens and native plant collections at the Botanical Gardens. It’s perfect for a relaxing day surrounded by nature, with beautiful flowers, exotic plants, and quiet walking paths.
The Auckland Museum is a short stroll up the hill for those wanting to explore some New Zealand history, free for Auckland residents, by donation for the rest of New Zealand and a fee for overseas visitors.
Entry is free to the Parnell Rose gardens, which are also in the area and offer a stunning display of over 5000 roses. When in peak season, late October and November, it offers a vibrant atmosphere. The annual Parnell Rose Festival is held in November and adds a festive feel to the visit.
3. Walk Along the Waterfront and Ōrākei Basin
From Viaduct Harbour to Wynyard Quarter and Silo Park to some of Auckland's oldest and richest suburbs of Parnell, Kohimarama, Remuera and St Heliers, Auckland’s waterfront offers beautiful harbour views, public art, and a lively atmosphere. It’s ideal for a casual stroll, bike ride, becoming a beachcomber, enjoying the sailing regattas, hiking or to simply partake in people-watching while enjoying the fresh sea air. Find a cafe and use the free wifi, whilst having a coffee. Make your way up the hill at Bastion Point to the Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Park, Takaparawhā, for some great views of the city, including across to the dormant volcano Rangitoto Island, over the Waitamatā Harbour and Hauraki Gulf, also known as Tikapa Moana. If visiting on a Saturday, explore the French-Inspired Farmers Market in Parnell, open 8am-12noon.
Ōrākei Basin is a tidal lagoon formed by a volcanic eruption approximately 120,000 years ago. Around 4km and taking about 1 hour, it's a beautiful walk around the edge of the basin including a boardwalk and bridge, offering plant life, birds, water sports, cafes and views across the city.
4. Picnic at Shakespear Regional Park
Located on the Hibiscus Coast, Shakespear Regional Park is a lovely green space perfect for picnics, playing frisbee, hiking, biking, bbqs or relaxing under the shade of trees. It’s a local favourite spot with plenty of open lawn and stunning views of the city skyline. If you are feeling energetic, hike or bike around the end of the Whangaparāoa Peninsula and be rewarded with fresh air and spectacular views. Kayak, collect cockles or explore the rock pools at low tide for a more sedate experience. If you are looking for a camping spot then there is a DOC area to pitch your tent or park your campervan, booking and fees may be required so check out the DOC website. The park includes 1200 acres of fenced Nature Reserve so you might even spot a Kiwi.
If arriving in a campervan that is self-contained, you can freedom camp at the Gulf Harbour Marina Hammerhead Reserve for a maximum of two nights. This reserve sits at the end of Laurie Southwick Parade and is adjacent to the Gulf Harbour Ferry terminal, marina and has beach access. Perfect spot to head out to explore the islands of the Hauraki Gulf, Tikapa Moana, or visit one of the many beaches in the area. For an added highlight, check out the sting rays and fish that frequent the water in the marina. No fishing allowed, no snorkel needed, they are simply beautiful and easily viewed.
5. Stroll Through Silo Park
Silo Park, in Wynyard Quarter, is a creative hub with public art installations, open spaces, and a buzzing weekend market. It’s a great place to soak in the urban vibe, enjoy the yachts, catch a free event or outdoor movie in summer and enjoy views of the Waitematā Harbour and Auckland Harbour Bridge. Catch a glimpse of a super-yacht, like James Packer's $357million IJE, or admire the Team NZ's America's Cup winning yachts NZL32 and NZL60.
Visit the New Zealand Maritime Museum, which is free for Aucklanders, a small fee applies for non-Auckland residents or catch a show at the ASB Theatre, check out the schedules and pricing depending upon when you are visiting.
