My Relationship with Orchids ...

My parent's have grown, sold and competed in shows with their orchids for most of my life, hence I have had a long and loving relationship with these beautiful plants. Last weekend the North Shore Orchid Society held their spring show, so I went along with mum to help set up, and ended up recording a video, for those who might be inspired to go along themselves, and for those who couldn't make it to Albany, Auckland, New Zealand.

Orchidaceae ... what are they?

The Orchidaceae family, commonly known as orchids, is one of the largest and most diverse families of flowering plants. With over 28,000 species and more than 100,000 hybrids, orchids are known for their unique shapes, vibrant colors, and intricate structures.

Characteristics of Orchids

Orchids are distinguished by several key features:

  • Symmetry: Most orchids exhibit bilateral symmetry, meaning they can be divided into two mirror-image halves.

  • Flowers: Their flowers often have a distinctive structure, with three outer petals and three inner petals, one of which is typically modified into a lip (labellum).

  • Pollination: Many orchids have evolved complex relationships with specific pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, and birds, often mimicking the appearance or scent of other flowers or insects.

Habitat and Distribution

Orchids are found worldwide, from tropical rainforests to temperate regions. They thrive in a variety of habitats, including:

  • Tropical forests: Home to the majority of orchid species, where they often grow as epiphytes on trees.

  • Grasslands: Some terrestrial orchids can be found in open fields and meadows.

  • Mountainous regions: Certain species are adapted to high altitudes and cooler climates.

Cultivation and Care

Orchids are popular among gardeners and plant enthusiasts due to their beauty and variety. Here are some basic care tips:

  • Light: Most orchids prefer bright, indirect sunlight.

  • Water: They generally require regular watering but should not sit in water to avoid root rot.

  • Humidity: Orchids thrive in high humidity, making misting or a humidity tray beneficial.

Conclusion

The Orchidaceae family is a fascinating and diverse group of plants that captivate many with their beauty and complexity. Whether in the wild or cultivated at home, orchids continue to be a symbol of elegance and grace in the plant kingdom; there is sure to be one that speaks to your heart and makes its way into your life... what better way is there than to share their love!
