Riding the WOW Train, Great Journeys NZ

We started planning for this trip over a year ago, and it grew into an experience that far exceeded the actual show, and instead extended itself into a few days of creativity, fun, laughter, talking and, most importantly, love... and not just for our group, as our frivolities seemed to touch many others along the way! I hope that you also find some pleasure in this account.

... and, a few more laughs!

WOW VIP Train Experience with Great Journeys NZ...

The WOW VIP Train Experience provides a luxurious way to discover New Zealand's breathtaking landscapes aboard a high-end train service. Great Journeys NZ offers a unique chance to travel comfortably while taking in stunning views of mountains, rivers, and coastlines, whilst also enjoying presentations of previous WOW garments along the way.

Departing early from Auckland on Thursday 02 October, we spent approximately eleven hours travelling to Wellington; a great way to see the country and spend time with the group. On arrival in Wellington we were transferred to Rydges Wellington Hotel. The accommodation was excellent. Gold seat tickets, plus a programme, to the WOW show on the Friday night, and the flight back to Auckland, were included in the package.

In summary of the train trip, as Great Journeys NZ advertised for the VIP Train Experience: "It’s more than just a journey; it’s an unforgettable adventure."

WOW! What's it all about?

The World of Wearable Arts (WOW) Show is a spectacular annual event held September-October, in Wellington, New Zealand, that celebrates creativity, fashion, and art. This unique showcase blends the boundaries between clothing and artistic expression, featuring designs that are often outlandish, imaginative, and visually stunning.

We decided to take it even further by dressing up ourselves, bringing the audience into the show.

Some highlights of the Show:

  • Innovative Designs: Designers from around the globe submit their creations, which range from whimsical to avant-garde.

  • Live Performances: The show incorporates theatrical elements, with models performing on stage, enhancing the visual experience.

  • Categories: Entries are judged in various categories, including wearable art, costume design, and more, ensuring a diverse array of styles.

  • Audience Engagement: The event captivates audiences with its vibrant atmosphere and stunning visuals, making it a must-see.

Attending the WOW Show is not just about fashion; it's an immersive experience that celebrates creativity and innovation. Whether you're a fashion enthusiast, an artist, or simply looking for a fun night out, WOW promises to leave you inspired, entertained and witness to an extraordinary fusion of art and fashion in the heart of Wellington!

Maureen and the Maurettes

Mum has been to WOW on two previous occasions and was keen to go with the "girls" in her family, inspired by their enthusiasm for creativity, and their passion for the arts, performance and fashion; as well as the fact that we all get along well and enjoy some fun when we get together. A group of fifteen was formed.

We decided to do the WOW VIP Train Experience, hosted by Great Journeys NZ, which included the train ride Auckland to Wellington on the Northern Explorer, with WOW outfits paraded along the way, all meals, accommodation in Wellington, the WOW show, and our flight back to Auckland. The whole thing was easy and made for a truly memorable experience. All we needed to do was add our own little side adventures while in Wellington, and the scene was set.

To add to our experience, a challenge was laid down for some dress-up fun, on the train trip, and at the show; and the girls did not disappoint. The train theme was to be 'dressed as a year in Maureen's life', and we had eighty-nine years of life to choose from ... hence, the Maurettes were born! The show theme was to be 'based on any of the WOW six categories, or "Rise" (the show's main theme for 2025),' with the colour navy tying our group together; and I can truly say that we had heads turning with our outfits ... it is a good feeling to uplift others with an easy bit of fun, creativity and silliness.

Wellington Highlights

Wellington offers many unique tourist attractions, yet with only a day to spare, we had to select a couple of them, and we decided to walk the waterfront and quay area, visiting Te Papa Museum, and tour Wētā Workshops. All great fun, with the added bonus of finding the Croc Bikes .... the Wellington waterfront will never be the same again. It turns out that the 'Maurettes' are a wee bit competitive, and the squealing and the laughter rocked the city!

Conclusion

WOW is a great experience for anyone, not just the creatives amongst you, and the VIP Train Experience made it easy, sociable, and added to the whole trip away. Think about adding your own extra sense of creativity and fun and allow time to explore some of Wellington .. I gaurantee that you won't be disappointed. Be prepared to be WOWed!
