My travels to Kenya ...
My travel experience of Kenya was on an Intrepid Travel tour, making it easy and fun. I was there in June-July, it was a camping tour, small group size, with all the on-ground details being taken care of for me, pre travel and on tour, when necessary. I thoroughly recommend doing as many excursions as you can, they really do enhance the experience. I recommend doing safaris at differing times of the day, to give a unique experience of the changing animal activity.
My Top Tip: do a hot-air balloon safari, they are a lot of fun, you get a delicious breakfast and champagne, and the views are spectacular.
Kenya Travel Guide
Kenya, located in East Africa, is a vibrant country known for its stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, and rich cultural heritage. Whether you’re planning a safari, a beach getaway, or a cultural experience, here’s a quick guide to help you navigate your trip.
Kenya covers an area of approximately 580,367 square kilometres (224,081 square miles), making it the 48th largest country in the world, and the estimated population is over 57 million people. With over 40 ethnic groups, each with its own unique traditions, languages, and customs, Kenya's culture is a tapestry of various influences. Swahili and English are the official languages, but many Kenyans also speak their ethnic languages.
Kenyan culture is characterized by traditional practices such as music, dance, and art. Each ethnic group has its own traditional music and dance styles, often performed during ceremonies and celebrations. The Maasai, for example, are known for their vibrant beadwork and distinctive jumping dance.
Kenyan cuisine is diverse, featuring staples like ugali (maize porridge), nyama choma (grilled meat), and sukuma wiki (collard greens). Meals are often communal, emphasising the importance of family and community in Kenyan society.
Kenya hosts various festivals that showcase its cultural heritage. The Lamu Cultural Festival and the Nairobi International Book Fair are examples of events that celebrate art, literature, and traditional practices.
Travel Tips
Visa Requirements: Check if you need a visa before travelling; many nationalities can obtain an e-visa.
Note: There is an East Africa Tourist Visa which allows travel to Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda which can be used for 90 days and multiple times.
Health Precautions: Consult with a healthcare provider about vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis before your trip.
Currency: The local currency is the Kenyan Shilling, (1USD = 129.20KES). Credit cards are widely accepted, but it's good to have cash on hand.
Driving: is on the left-hand side of the road.
Getting There: Travelling to Kenya, Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport: The main international gateway, with numerous flights from major cities worldwide. Various bus companies provide services from neighboring countries such as Uganda and Tanzania. Renting a car is a popular option for exploring at your own pace.
My Five Top Destinations To Explore In Kenya
Nairobi: The capital city, home to the Nairobi National Park, where you can see lions, giraffes, and rhinos against the city skyline.
Maasai Mara: Renowned for the Great Migration, this reserve offers incredible wildlife viewing and is a must-visit for safari enthusiasts.
Lake Nakuru: Famous for its flamingo populations and stunning views, this lake is surrounded by beautiful landscapes.
Amboseli National Park: known as the 'home of the African Elephant', it is one of the best wildlife destinations in Kenya, and is often combined with the Maasai Mara.
Tsavo East National Park: located in the southeast, near the Tanzanian border and close to the coast, it is one of Kenya's oldest, and biggest, parks.
Wildlife and Safaris
Kenya is home to some of the most famous national parks and reserves in the world. When planning a safari, consider:
Best Time to Visit: The dry season from June to October is ideal for wildlife viewing.
Safari Types: Options include game drives, walking safaris, night safaris, and hot air balloon rides for a unique perspective.
Consider a camping experience: there is nothing better than hearing the sounds of the African wildlife at night, and waking up to giraffes, monkeys or other beasts outside your camping spot. It's all safe and well protected and only requires you to be smart in how you spend your time onsite.
Cultural Experiences
Immerse yourself in the local culture by visiting:
Maasai Villages: Engage with the Maasai people and learn about their traditions and lifestyle.
Local Markets: Explore vibrant markets in Nairobi and other cities for crafts, jewellery, local produce, and local cuisine.
Arts: there are often local artists painting or selling their work in openair studios, or on the roadside, so stop and take some time to enjoy their creations.
Conclusion:
With its breathtaking landscapes and rich wildlife, Kenya offers an unforgettable travel experience. Whether you're on a thrilling safari or relaxing on the beach, there's something for everyone to enjoy!
